We’ve all heard the phrase “Rome wasn’t built in a day”—a reminder that anything worth building takes time. But on a recent trip to Italy, I finally understood just how true that really is.
Megan and I spent several days exploring the city of Rome, walking nearly 10 miles each day and still feeling like we’d only scratched the surface. We visited the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Vatican City, and the Roman Forum, each place more breathtaking than the last. Along the way, we stopped in countless churches, many of which could have been destinations in their own right, thanks to their incredible detail and beauty.
If you’ve seen the Colosseum, you may know that only about one-third of the original structure remains. While some of the loss is due to natural disasters, much of the missing stone was actually repurposed over the centuries. Romans were practical; they reused materials from older buildings to construct new ones. In fact, many of Rome’s churches and monuments were built using travertine limestone taken from the Colosseum itself. Had that stone not been reused, the Colosseum might still stand nearly complete today.
There are lessons to be learned from the Romans. For starters, maybe don’t use lead pipes for your city’s water supply. But more importantly, true and lasting accomplishments take time. Whether it’s building a city, a legacy, or financial security, it doesn’t happen overnight. It takes vision, discipline, and commitment.
